About Immersed Games

A decade building
learning worlds.

We’ve spent ten years figuring out how to make games where students actually do the thinking. Now we’re opening those tools to everyone.

Who we are

A small team
with a long obsession.

Immersed Games is a research-driven studio building game-based learning that holds up to the evidence. We started as a single question in a PhD program — we know how people learn best, so why does almost no digital tool deliver it? — and we’ve been answering it ever since.

For ten years that meant building Tyto Online: an open world where learners investigate real phenomena, run their own experiments, and build arguments from evidence. We deployed it with schools, ran the studies, and earned the grants to keep proving it works.

The next decade is about handing those tools to the people who know their learners best.

The team

The people building it.

A small, senior team of designers, engineers, and learning scientists — most of us have been at this for years.

The origin story · in Lindsey’s words

I first had the idea for Tyto Online while playing World of Warcraft. I was playing and realized how much I learned just through experience, and became fascinated with educational games. As I went through a PhD program in Education, I kept linking ideal learning models back to gaming mechanics and approaches. I accidentally created a mental model for what amazing learning would look like within a game, and assumed it existed.

However, when I started digging in for my dissertation, I discovered it didn’t — that the educational games market had some major limitations for learning impact. They tended to be shallow learning, and the experiences were fragmented without the opportunity for long-term learning.

So the idea that we could create a single learning game platform began to emerge for me: with deep learning that focused on skill building, and with many areas of content so that learners and educators could easily use game-based learning regularly as part of their learning process.

I am excited to help reach this ideal goal of what learning could be in games that people have dreamt about for a long time, but had yet to be reached.

The journey

From a hunch to a platform.

2014

An idea in grad school.

While earning her PhD studying education, founder Lindsey Tropf kept circling the same gap: research is clear about how people learn deeply, yet almost nothing digital actually delivers it. Games already did the thing classrooms struggled to — so why not build one on purpose?

2015

Immersed Games is founded.

The idea became a company, and the company landed its first funding. Enough to stop theorizing and start building something real.

2016

Tyto Ecology — a small first bet.

Rather than build the whole vision at once, we shipped a focused MVP: a game where players construct a living biodome and keep its food web in balance. It found an audience fast — a signal that the core idea had legs.

Tyto Online enters early access.

The full vision arrived: an open, explorable world where students step into careers, investigate phenomena firsthand, and solve problems that matter. The same year, our first NSF grant validated that the science was worth funding.

Built for the classroom.

We made a deliberate choice to focus on schools. That meant building the things teachers actually need — assignments, dashboards, standards alignment — and putting the first version in front of real classrooms through a beta trial.

Into the browser.

When COVID closed classrooms overnight, access became everything. We brought Tyto into the web browser — no installs, no IT tickets, just a link — so learning could happen anywhere a student had a connection.

2021–2024 · Deploy & prove

Years in real classrooms.

We spent these years deploying with schools, building content, and running the studies that turn “we think this works” into evidence — reaching tens of thousands of students and partnering with researchers like TERC along the way.

2025 → Today

From one game to an authoring studio.

After a decade of proving the model, we made our biggest bet yet: take everything we learned and put it in other people’s hands. The Tyto Authoring Studio lets educators and organizations build their own learning games — no code, with the pedagogy built in.
